Seven Reasons Why Breastfeeding is the Best Choice for a Baby

After reading this article, check out the author’s Doula in San Antonio website for more information.

Why should you breastfeed your baby? Here are just a few of the many reasons:

  1. Breastmilk is designed to be the perfect food for your baby.
  2. Breastfeeding boosts your baby’s immune system, preventing and minimizing many sicknesses.
  3. It helps prevent allergies, especially if you breastfeed exclusively for at least 6 months.
  4. Breastfeeding also helps prevent ear infections, childhood obesity, diarrhea and constipation, promotes proper jaw, teeth and speech development, and reduces the risk of SIDS.
  5. Breastmilk is sterile and always ready the moment your baby needs it, which makes it perfectly convenient!
  6. Breastfeeding is calming, comforting and promotes bonding between you and your baby.
  7. Studies have shown that the longer a mother breastfeeds throughout her life, the lower her chances are of getting breast cancer.

Getting off to a good start with breastfeeding can be a challenge, but it is well worth it. Breastfeed your baby as soon as possible after the birth, preferably within one hour. Hold your baby skin-to-skin; this will encourage him to latch on, among many other benefits. Make sure your baby is latched on well from the start – don’t be afraid to ask for help from your nurse, doula, midwife, lactation consultant, or experienced friend.

You should not be separated from your baby, “rooming in” is better for both mother and baby. Do not give artificial nipples to your baby or allow anyone else to do so. Nurse your baby as often as he is hungry, for as long as he wants to suck. Supplements are rarely needed, and most of the time when supplementation is recommended, there are alternative feeding methods that can be used to maintain exclusive breastfeeding. Contact a good lactation consultant if you have questions about what you are being told.

Here are some basics for good positioning and latch-on. Make sure you are comfortable, with lots of pillows for support, Baby should be on his side, tummy to tummy with you. Support your breast with the hand closest to the baby’s head, and the baby’s head and neck with your other hand. Start with baby’s chin touching the breast first, then let the baby touch the nipple and wait for his mouth to open wide. Bring the baby to the breast, not the breast to the baby, and aim the nipple for the roof of baby’s mouth, you want his mouth to be open wide and covering as much of the areola as possible. You can tell that the baby is drinking when you hear him swallowing and he is sucking deeply and pausing with each suck.

This information is intended to be merely supportive in nature. Please contact your physician or a lactation consultant for diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

Misery–A Review

Misery is a movie based on Stephen King novel. The story is of Paul Sheldon, a famous writer, who runs his car off a cliff in a snowstorm. Anne Wilkes is a nurse who happened to be in the area and saved him from feezing to death in the car. After she pulls him out, she takes him to her house and begins to nurse him back to health. She professes to be his “number one fan.” A few days into being in her house, she realizes that she’s a bit crazy, and is prone to tempers. Then it turns out that she had been following him and watching him before he got in the accident. Paul begins to get scared and tries to get out of the house, but the doors are locked and Anne lives in the middle of nowhere.

Meanwhile, Buster, a local sheriff, is trying to track down what happened to Paul Sheldon. He discovers the car, and while most of the media believe that Paul Sheldon crawled out, Buster believes that someone had pulled him out. He also starts reading Paul Sheldon books. Anne has set up a writing studio and forces Paul to write another book, to continue on his series. After he escapes a second time to look around the house, she catches him and breaks his legs to make sure he won’t get away.

One day, Buster and Anne run into each other in town and Buster starts to wonder about her, and finds out that she is a big fan of Paul Sheldon and uses his quotes.

Finally a Coffee Alternative that Really Works!

I’m sure you’ve seen the now famous old time photo on T shirts with the guy literally vibrating and the saying “Coffee; Is the Planet shaking or is it just me?”

Granted that’s humorous. But the reason it’s funny, is because it’s true. We only really think things are funny when we can relate to them in some way and for us to really relate well there must be at least a little bit of truth to it.

Did you know, when polled, most coffee drinkers said they would like to try a coffee alternative if one existed that actually worked and that didn’t taste like recycled motor oil (Ok, I added the motor oil bit, but you get the point).

You know, we all have our own personal reasons why we want to get off coffee and I respect that, however I have compiled a few just to illustrate a couple of the reasons why I no longer drink the stuff.

The top ten reasons you should find a good coffee alternative right now are
1.    You haven’t blinked since the last lunar eclipse.
2.     You get a speeding ticket even when you’re parked.
3.    The nurse needs a scientific calculator to take your pulse.
4.    You sleep with your eyes open.
5.    The only time you’re standing still is during an earthquake.
6.    Your eyes stay open when you sneeze.
7.    You chew on other people’s fingernails.
8.    You’re so jittery that people use your hands to blend their margaritas.
9.    Your only source of nutrition comes from “Sweet & Low.”
10.    Charles Manson thinks you need to calm down.

We all know we really want to get off this addictive rollercoaster we call Java but what are the coffee alternatives out there? Is there really a coffee alternative that works?

Well, yes there is, it’s a South American herb called Yerba Mate that the natives of the regions of Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil have been drinking for Centuries.
It has the power to Invigorate the mind and energize the body without giving you the jitters the shakes or the dreaded Crash! And It can do all this while supplying you with one of the world’s most potent antioxidants to help keep you healthy and well.

There are two problems however:
1. Yerba Mate all by itself will not amount to much of a mainstream coffee alternative without the help of some other herbs like Catuaba and Pata De Vaca. These serve to turbo charge it and really give you that ultra crisp sharpness that a North American connoisseur demands.

2. It has to still be Green and Unroasted or most of the nutritional and antioxidant benefits are destroyed. It must also be Organically grown because some of the pesticides they use in those countries have long since been banned from use in the USA. And of course if it’s Organic they aren’t using any sprays at all.

So, does a viable alternative to coffee really exist. Sure it does and I drink it every day. You Just have to find a blend of the herbs Yerba Mate, Catuaba and Pata De Vaca. Once you find your perfect combination of these herbs your search for a viable coffee alternative that works will be over. And you will be a happy camper who doesn’t have the jitters and no longer crashes just like me.
