Icy Road Commotion: Look At Yourself Before Criticising The Authorities.
We are currently amidst the worst winter for snow since at least 92. The south east of England, as well as all the main airports and London’s Underground and bus networks closed down, forcing millions of people to make a harsh decision between deserting their journey or trying to make it by car.
The problem for the car drivers in this circumstance is that they face the same road circumstnaces that prohibited the public systems from working in the first place.
It is true to say that most mainland European countries manage with much worse circumstances than we are presently experiencing, and they do it without any drama. But, to be fair to our Public Transport and Roads Authorities we need to keep in mind that we only see circumstances like these every 10 to twenty years. Furthermore, the equipment needed to manage with such weather is very pricey & would involve further spending that most Rate Payers and Public Transport Users wouldn’t be prepared to pay.
To put this in perspective: how many UK drivers have a set of winter tyres, to allow them to drive more safely on snowy roads? And, what percentage have put a pair of Silicone wiper blades so that they continue to be flexible in extremely snowy conditions and remain unaffected by the solvent attack that results from using winter screen wash? In winter conditions, summer tyres just clog up with snow, so that they swiftly turn into icy slicks. Rubber Wiper blades stiffen in snowy conditions, and when it gets very cold they Fracture. On a icy winter morning, the majority of us have seen or experienced stiff Car wiper blades that only contact the screen in one or two places, leaving the majority of the screen un-wiped just when you need your visibility most.
Before complaining about the condition of the roads & how small amounts snow bring the country to a standstill, we should all take a look at our cars and ourselves, and see how well organised we are for icy conditions. For instance, how many of us can really say we:-
Ensure all the windows are clear of ice, properly de-iced and de-misted before we leave that the windscreen washer bottle is topped up, and has enough de-icer and to avoid it freezing.
Have Sunglasses in the car to reduce the glare of low winter sun on the snow.
Keep an emergency box in the car containing water, high-energy food such as chocolate, spare clothing, a blanket or sleeping bag. A high-visibility jacket is also suggested.
Make certain your mobile phone is fully charged, and that you know the number of a breakdown group if you are a member.
Make certain you have a good torch and Bring a shovel to dig your car out in case you get stuck in snow drifts.
Only people who do all the above have any right to fault the authorities levels of preparedness.
